As you know, this was the second job Manor Works has completed for us. My husband and I agree, each time it has been money well spent. The guys worked a very long day to get everything done without compromising the quality of their work. After completing 2 jobs for us, I’m now starting to feel like they are “my painters”.

Paint Ingredients and Specialty Paints

11.17.2011

Specialty-Paint-Swatches.jpegWhile standard paints are suitable for many painting situations, homeowners and painting contractors alike often seek special paints. Modern technology has allowed paint manufacturers to produce a wide array of products with amazing characteristics. Whether it is molecular engineering or added ingredients, these added features do add to the cost of paint, but they also enhance the qualities significantly.

Many quality paints have added ingredients to create special functions. One example of a paint additive that improves performance is mildewcide, an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of mold and mildew. Painting contractors often apply this on home exteriors or in areas of the home that are prone to moisture issues.

For example, Sherwin Williams has a line of paint that contains odor-eliminating properties. As this Harmony® paint ages, it actually purifies the air in your home environment!

Most paints create layers as they dry, so that the color is only on the surface. Some companies, however, have engineered the polymers in the paint so that the pigment is evenly distributed through the paint, even when dry. This gives added color protection so that when a painted wall is scraped, the color does not come off from the surface: every part of the paint is colored evenly.

Most quality paint companies also produce reduced VOC and no VOC products. VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) are ingredients in paint that produce smells that can be irritating to some people. These low- and no-VOC products are friendlier to the homeowner and the environment!

For example, Benjamin Moore's new environmentally aware product, Aura®, has modified every aspect of their paint to protect our planet. It has no VOC's, the packaging is all made from recycled materials, and the paint is guaranteed to travel no farther than 500 miles in all stages of production and sale, limiting its carbon footprint.

When you are making the financial investment in repainting your home, the actual cost of materials is only a small fraction of the overall cost. It is worthwhile to do some research about what specialized products might help out with the specific needs of your home and family, and then spend the extra money to ensure a paint job you will be happy with for many years.
